SCL Seminar by Antun Balaz

SCL seminar of the Center for the Study of Complex Systems, will be held on Thursday, 14 September 2017 at 14:00 in the library reading room “Dr Dragan Popović" of the Institute of Physics Belgrade. The talk entitled

"Droplet Formation in Quantum Ferrofluids"

will be given by Dr. Antun Balaž (Scientific Computing Laboratory, Center for the Study of Complex Systems, Institute of Physics Belgrade).

Abstract of the talk:

In the recent experiment [1], the Rosensweig instability was observed in a quantum ferrofluid of a strongly dipolar BEC, leading to a formation of atomic droplets. In Ref. [2] it was demonstrated that the stability of such droplets is provided by the quantum fluctuation correction of the ground-state energy [3, 4]. In this talk we will extend this previous theoretical description and develop a full Bogoliubov-Popov theory, which also takes into account the condensate depletion due to quantum fluctuations. We will apply this approach to numerically [5] study the droplet formation in a BEC of atomic dysprosium, induced by a sudden reduction of the s-wave scattering length or tilting of the dipoles. We will also study how phase imprinting affects the droplet formation process.
