SCL Online Seminar by Iva Bačić

You are cordially invited to the SCL online seminar of the Center for the Study of Complex Systems, which will be held on Thursday, 5 November 2020 at 14:00 on Zoom. The talk entitled

Self-organization in coupled excitable systems: interplay between multiple timescale dynamics and noise

will be given by Iva Bačić (Scientific Computing Laboratory, Center for the Study of Complex Systems, Institute of Physics Belgrade). Abstract of the talk:

We will discuss several types of self-organized dynamics in coupled stochastic excitable systems with multiple timescale dynamics, considering three complementary lines of research. Within the first one, we will extend the notion of excitability to coupled systems by classifying the excitable responses of a small motif of locally excitable units, as well as by establishing the concept of macroscopic excitability. The second line of research concerns switching dynamics induced by the interplay of noise and multiplicity of timescales in small systems of locally excitable units, where we will demonstrate that this interplay gives rise to two different types of switching dynamics, namely slow stochastic fluctuations and stochastic bursting. Within the third research line, we will discuss resonant phenomena in coupled systems with local dynamics near the bifurcation threshold. In particular, we will identify two generic scenarios for the onset of inverse stochastic resonance and demonstrate a novel method of efficient control of coherence resonance based on slowly adapting feedback.
