ERC Grant Postdoc positions at SCL

Institute of Physics Belgrade (IPB, Serbia) offers three postdoctoral positions, funded by the European Research Council through the ERC Starting Grant SCLoTHiFi, which starts on 01/01/2023. The 5-year project will focus on the theoretical study of interacting electrons on a lattice, within the Hubbard model and its generalizations. The aim of the project is the understanding of the transport properties of strongly correlated materials (primarily the cuprates), and the identification of mechanisms that affect the magnitude of the superconducting critical temperature.

The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with the PI, Jakša Vučičević, and other team members, as well as with researchers in some of the leading institutions in Europe. The tasks will involve both the development and the application of state-of-the-art numerical methods for the solution of correlated lattice models. The theory will be put to the test in comparison with experiments on the cuprates, kappa-organics, moiré and optical lattices. The topics of investigation will include quantum criticality, strange metal behavior, and the effects of external magnetic fields, lattice geometry, disorder, phonons, as well as higher-energy bands.

We offer:

- two-year contract with the possibility of extension, up until the end of the project (31/12/2027).
- flexible start date (the positions will remain open until filled)
- vibrant environment with excellent working conditions, including significant in-house computational resources
- frequent visits to leading institutions in Paris and Ljubljana, including longer stays
- a competitive salary in a major city with a low cost of living (up to 3300 EUR a month, gross, depending on the level of experience of the candidate)

Requirements:

- a PhD in condensed matter physics, preferably in the field of strongly correlated electrons
- experience with at least some numerical quantum many-body methods (such as dynamical mean-field theory and its cluster or diagrammatic extensions, diagrammatic or quantum Monte Carlo, numerical renormalization group, Lanczos etc.)
- strong analytical and math skills
- solid experience with programming in C++ and Python and running large scale computations
- fluent English, and a solid degree of independence in writing papers

Applications should be sent to jaksa [dot] vucicevic [at] ipb [dot] ac [dot] rs and should include:

- Motivation letter
- detailed CV, list of publications and a short description of the most relevant past achievements
- contact details of two (or up to four) persons who can provide recommendation letters for the candidate

IPB is an equal opportunity employer. We encourage applications from female and/or minority group researchers. For more details about the host institution visit
